☐ Plan for temporary housing until your household goods arrive.
☐ Obtain residence, work permits, and driving permits in your new state.

6 to 8 weeks before your move
☐ Determine which household goods can be shipped to your destination.
☐ Survey your household goods. Decide which items to move, store, give away or sell.
☐ Make your personal travel plans, such as airline tickets, hotel reservations. Order maps of your destination state and new hometown.
☐ Set a packing date with your move coordinator.
☐ Gather family records: passports, medical, dental, school, birth, baptismal, marriage, financial, insurance, and wills.
☐ Make travel arrangements for pets. Your National move coordinator can offer referrals.
Arrange to discontinue utilities and other home services just prior to the moving date. In some cases, you may be due a refund.
☐ Electric and/or gas
☐ Water, water softener service
☐ Telephone and/or long distance provider
☐ Internet provider
☐ Fuel or oil delivery
☐ Garbage, recycling collection
☐ Cable provider or satellite TV
☐ Lawn, pool service
Change your address with your local post office and prepare change of address cards to:
☐ Friends, relatives
☐ Social Security Administration
☐ Credit card companies
☐ Investment companies
2 to 3 weeks before your move
☐ Fill prescription medications
☐ Advise insurance companies of your move, your new address and update policies
☐ Cancel club memberships
1 week before your move
☐ Defrost refrigerator and freezer.
☐ Use or dispose of perishable food items.
☐ Make arrangements for child care on moving day.
☐ Transfer funds from checking accounts to new accounts in your new state.
☐ Drain fuel and oil from lawnmowers and other power equipment.
☐ Mark items that you will be shipping via air freight. Set aside “last in, first out” items to be kept separate from other belongings. These are items you will need immediately upon arrival in your new home.
☐ Close out your safety deposit boxes. These high value items should be carried with you.
☐ Keep important travel documents and your passports separate, to be carried with you on your trip.
☐ Safely dispose of or give away flammable materials. These items cannot be moved.
Examples: household chemicals or cleaning solutions, propane tanks, paints, solvents, etc.
☐ Clothing, draperies, curtains and rugs should be dry cleaned or laundered before they are prepared for shipment.
☐ Pack suitcases.
☐ You will need to be available on moving day to check your household possessions against the inventory list.
☐ Remember to get your copy of all shipping documents.
☐ Take a final tour of your home. Make sure lights are turned off and windows and doors are locked.
☐ Confirm contact information with your move coordinator, such as cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses.
☐ Confirm your anticipated arrival date and the address of your new home.
Move in day
☐ Be present to check each item against the inventory list as your household possessions are unloaded and brought into your new home.
